In an attempt to flee Nazi-occupied France, Georg assumes the identity of a dead author but soon finds himself stuck in Marseilles, where he falls in love with Maria, a young woman searching for her missing husband.

"Transit" is a new German 2018 movie and this one was written and directed by Christian Petzold and like almost all his other works, it has a one-word title. I cannot deny that I am a bit of a fan of Petzold and his works and this one here adds more quality to his body of work. There is always some kind of raw authenticity to his filmmaking efforts. At 100 minutes roughly, it is among his longer movies and it is loosely based on Anna Seghers` old novel with the same name like the movie. The main character is played by Franz Rogowski, who is turning into one of Germany`s most successful actors now and I have seen him in lead parts in several new German films. It`s also not the most usual for Petzold as most of the time there`s female protagonists at the center of his works, usually played by Nina Hoss or earlier by Julia Hummer too. So maybe it is not so surprising really that I found Paula Beer`s portrayal here perhaps the most memorable aspect about this film. She feels like a dark-haired Nina Hoss at times for sure and also for her it is another strong addition to her career. She is definitely up and coming now. The rest of the cast are all decent too and while this includes Rogowski, I am still not really impressed or sold by his turn here or his craft in general. He may be a bit of a fresh breeze, but if he really has the talent to lead films like this one, I think it is a no at this point. Nonetheless, the movie works well most of the time. The only thing I found a bit confusing was the political and historic background combined with these modern references. It was a creative decision obviously, but for me it may have been a bit too abstract. Other than that, it was a good watch and it felt easy to care for the characters and their fates. Maybe the concept of transit was not as memorable or impressive to me as I hoped it would be, but still as an essential component and not just a bureaucratic term at the very center of the film, it is working solidly. I was curious what would happen next and surprisingly the song used during the creadits eventually, which was really different compared to the tone and style of everything before that. was working as well and it takes quite something to succeed there. I myself would say that as a character study the film manages nicely most of the time and you will probably be curious about what happens next to the characters. It is never really showy, never really something that will have you scream from excitement at the edge of your chair, but if you have seen other stuff by Petzold, then you won`t expect that. And you don`t need to expect it as he succeeds with a completely different approach in general and also here in this particular case. I give Transit a thumbs-up, even if I must say that there was something missing compared to his career-best efforts, but obviously this was far from a bad watch let alone a failure. I suggest you watch one of the director`s older movies and then decide if you want to check this one out, maybe also one of Rogowski`s older/better movies in order to make a final decision. I think Transit is worth seeing as it was exuted pretty competently. Go check it out.

Possibly the biggest swing with the best result of the entire year, it`s not simply the fact that "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse" is so many things, but it`s the fact that it`s so many things executed outstandingly well that makes it possibly the year`s best comic-book movie, nay *movie* (arguably). I`m a simple guy. I walk into an animated movie, I ask for two things. Number one -- tell me an interesting story. And number two -- make it look good. And, dear God, does this do both of those things to an almost excruciatingly original degree. Add my favorite Marvel character and one of my favorite working creatives -- Phil Lord -- into that mix and you get something I never even realized could turn out as objectively magnificent as this. This is a fantastically deep study on not only what the idea of "Spider-Man" means to the characters within the film, but what it means to all people -- including the audience. Spider-Man, the movie posits, is not just a hero, an example, or a cultural fixture, but a mechanism to help people believe in things bigger than themselves. Yes, the movie is that deep. And, boy, does it work. One of the only movies I`ve seen this year that immediately made me want to about-face my happy ass back to the box office and buy another ticket. It`s pure, cinematic candy at its finest.

AMUNDSEN is another exploration of a key figure in Norwegian history by director Espen Sandberg, whom previously has been a part of MAX MANUS and KON-TIKI. Two films that also highlights great achievements by Norwegians. As a very small country, us Norwegians have a tendency to root for and glorify people that achieves the spectacular, and we celebrate them as heroes. AMUNDSEN is a film about Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian polar explorer that lead the first expedition to traverse the Northwest Passage and the first first expedition to the South Pole amongst other things.

It`s a film that attempts to explain and provide insight into who Roald Amundsen was, more so than to retell his expeditions. This is not an action-oriented film that focuses on the fight between man and nature. Much of the film is kind of told through a conversation between Amundsen`s brother and Bess Magids, one of Amundsen`s romances. This is the framework of the film, with Amundsen`s achievements plotted in between throughout this conversation. It`s a fine enough structure in theory and I appreciate that the filmmakers have decided to not just show an expedition and leave it at that, but instead to fully explore the man behind these great achievements. It doesn`t glorify him or lift his hero status in any way. He`s portrayed as a very flawed and slightly bitter man outside of his accomplishments. Unfortunately, the film only seems to scrape the surface of who he was. Heck, I would say that the film only touches the surface of everything it introduces.

The huge issue with AMUNDSEN is that it feels like a PowerPoint presentation with bullet points from Wikipedia to jump into every aspect of his life. The film is focused on trying to tell so much that it barely tells anything, but more importantly, it feels dramatically flat. Amundsen`s relationship with Bess Magids is never properly explored. We`re never told why they really care for each other. Amundsen`s relationship with his brother, which is one of the biggest parts of the story, never leaves the emotionally impact that it should. It`s too quickly glossed over. Even Amundsen`s journey to the South Pole feels underwhelming. We`re constantly told throughout the film that it`s a dangerous expedition, but they don`t show us that. When Amundsen finally reaches the South Pole (which is very early in the film), we should feel a sense of triumph, but instead I just sat there with a shoulder shrug. And that`s the thing, the structure of the film doesn`t work. It never lingers on the moments that are important in defining who Amundsen was, what the people around him meant to him, or what Amundsen meant to the people around him. It moves too quickly, but yet so slowly.

The performances are fine. Pål Sverre Hagen does a solid job as Amundsen (though the make-up used to make him look older is slightly distracting). The cinematography is great. There are couple of beautiful shots in it and you could see that the budget has been well-used. Which is why it`s such a shame that film is struggling on a narrative level.

The subject is quite a novel one which does work and is well acted. It does give a bit of an insight into youngsters in that position and is rightly focused on them rather than those around them.

But be warned this is not a feel good film it was a tough watch as the plot develops and it just seemed to find your emotions then stamp on them....Hard.
